Tom Brady is now a Broadcaster.

Tom Brady’s iconic 20-year run with the New England Patriots came to an end in 2020, closing a chapter that delivered six Super Bowl championships. While his departure was a major talking point throughout the 2019 season, Brady admitted in his recent newsletter that the decision to leave was a “creeping decision” that had been building over a few years.

“Until March of 2020, when a whirlwind of a few days made me realize that a decision was coming sooner rather than later,” Brady wrote, reflecting on his choice to leave New England.

Tension Between Brady and Belichick

Rumors of friction between Brady and longtime Patriots coach Bill Belichick had circulated during the final years of Brady’s tenure in New England. Brady confirmed these speculations, revealing that their evolving career paths and the franchise’s direction created an unavoidable tension.

“After twenty years together, a natural tension had developed between where Coach Belichick and I were headed in our careers, and where the Patriots were moving as a franchise,” Brady acknowledged. “It was the kind of tension that could only be resolved by some kind of split or one of us reassessing our priorities.”

No Reassessment, Just a Split

Neither Brady nor Belichick appeared willing to reassess their priorities, which led to Brady’s departure. The legendary quarterback signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers shortly after leaving New England and went on to win his seventh Super Bowl in his first season with the franchise.

Mutual Respect Despite the Split

Despite the growing tension toward the end of their time together, both Brady and Belichick maintained mutual respect. When Brady was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2024, Belichick paid tribute to his former quarterback with glowing praise.

“His determination and relentless pursuit of excellence was beyond anything I’ve seen from players at that position,” Belichick remarked in June. “Thank you for all you’ve done for us. Thank you for all you’ve done for me. And thank you for the example and model you’ve been for all of us. You’re unbelievable. Congratulations.”
