Jerry Jones has been the centre of attention for his unkind gesture and the franchise owner is paying for it. The 82-year-old was captured showing the middle finger to the fans during a game against the New York Jets, and the video is making the rounds on the internet.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones fined for his unkind gesture during Jets game
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Jones, who is the owner, president, and general manager of the Cowboys, was fined $250,000 after he was seen with an obscene gesture towards the fans. However, as per ESPN’s Todd Archer, the franchise will appeal the fine.
During his weekly radio appearance, Jones, who purchased the Cowboys in 1989, expressed his remorse for the gesture. He stated that it was a mistake and the American billionaire businessman revealed that he was attempting to signal the fans of the franchise at MetLife Stadium.
During an appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, Jones said:
"That was unfortunate.”
The NFL franchise owner further said:
“That was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us.”
Jones added:
"There was a swarm of Cowboys fans out in front -- not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with the enthusiasm of the Cowboys and certainly late in the game."
Jones further explained the gesture as “inadvertent” on his part, which was made after the franchise recorded its last touchdown, which made them “excited”, as per the owner. Jones called it the “wrong show on the hand” and stated that his intention was instead to show the 'thumbs up’ while the fans were excited and in joy.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys dominated the Jets and outlasted the opponents with a score of 37-22. The franchise is now 2-2-1 ahead of entering the game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, who are 2-3 so far.
