National Football League's International Player Pathway (IPP) program was launched in 2017, the IPP program aims to identify and nurture elite global talent, helping athletes from around the world develop the skills necessary to compete in the NFL. Selected players will have the chance to improve their athletic abilities and potentially secure spots on NFL rosters.
The IPP program is part of the NFL’s broader, longterm commitment to developing football talent worldwide and creating pathways for international players to join the league. Since its inception, 41 international players have been signed by NFL teams (either drafted, allocated, or signed as free agents). Currently, 23 athletes from the IPP are part of NFL rosters.
The NFL has revealed the athletes selected for the 2025 International Player Pathway (IPP) program, with 14 players representing 13 different countries. The league continues to expand its efforts to provide international athletes with opportunities to play at the highest level of American football.
Training and Development
Starting in January 2025, athletes in the program will train for 10 weeks at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Their training will cover both onfield football skills and classroom sessions to ensure they’re fully prepared to showcase their abilities. In March, the players will demonstrate their skills at the University of South Florida’s Pro Day, where NFL scouts will evaluate them for possible signing opportunities.
Eligible players may sign with NFL teams as free agents or be selected during the 2025 NFL Draft. Additionally, each NFL club can sign one international player to an exemption spot on their roster from the start of the offseason program until the roster reduction to 53 players. After that, international players may be assigned to a special 17th practice squad spot, reserved for international athletes across all teams.
Diverse Backgrounds and Global Talent
The IPP program has historically welcomed athletes from a wide range of sports backgrounds, including rugby, basketball, Gaelic football, and track & field. The program continues to benefit from toptier coaching staff, ensuring the athletes receive the best possible training to succeed in the NFL.
NFL Executive Vice President of International, Events, and Club Business, Peter O'Reilly, shared his excitement for the 2025 class: “The Class of 2025 is an exciting one, and we are delighted to welcome these talented athletes from around the world to the International Player Pathway program. Focusing on our global football development efforts and fostering international talent is crucial to growing our game globally. The IPP program offers lifechanging opportunities for international talent, and we look forward to following their progress in the weeks and months ahead.”
