Breanna Stewart has officially re-signed with the New York Liberty, the team announced on Saturday. The move was widely anticipated after Stewart’s instrumental role in helping the Liberty secure their first-ever WNBA Championship last season.
Stewart, a former standout at Cicero-North Syracuse High School, is a proven winner with an impressive resume. She has claimed three WNBA titles during her career — the first two with the Seattle Storm and the most recent one with the Liberty. The 30-year-old has also been named WNBA MVP twice and earned Finals MVP honors twice.
“Bringing Stewie back to the Liberty was our top priority this offseason,” said New York Liberty General Manager Jonathan Kolb. “Her impact on and off the court is immeasurable — she’s not only one of the best and most accomplished players in the world, but a leader whose relentless drive is foundational to the standard we continue to build upon in New York.”
Dominant Performances in New York
Since joining the Liberty in 2023, Stewart has been a dominant force on the court. In her two seasons with New York, she has averaged:
- 21.8 points per game
- 8.9 rebounds per game
- 3.7 assists per game
- 1.6 steals per game
- 1.4 blocks per game
Surgery and Recovery Timeline
Earlier this month, Stewart underwent arthroscopic surgery on her right meniscus. Fortunately, she is expected to make a full recovery before the start of training camp next month.
Offseason in Unrivaled League
During the offseason, Stewart kept her competitive edge sharp by playing in Unrivaled, the 3-on-3 league she co-founded with fellow WNBA star Napheesa Collier. Stewart averaged:
- 19.1 points per game
- 11.0 rebounds per game
- 3.1 assists per game
Despite her strong performances, her team missed the playoffs in the league’s inaugural season.
Liberty Gears Up for Title Defense
With Stewart back in the fold, the Liberty retained their entire starting five from last year’s championship squad. In addition to maintaining roster continuity, the team also strengthened its backcourt by adding Natasha Cloud in a recent trade.
As New York looks to defend its title, Stewart’s return reinforces their position as a top contender in the WNBA. Fans can expect the Liberty to make another strong push for championship glory with Stewart leading the charge.
