Caitlin Clark, the top pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, recently opened up about her disappointment with how the event unfolded, despite her exciting selection. Clark’s journey to the draft was nothing short of historic. She graduated from Iowa as one of the most iconic players in NCAA history, setting the all-time scoring record for Division I basketball (men’s and women’s) and leading her team to back-to-back Final Four appearances in 2023 and 2024.
In a candid conversation on the Fresh Talk podcast with Jada Gyamfi, alongside her former Iowa teammates Kate Martin and Gabbie Marshall, Clark shared her frustrations about missing out on key moments of the night.
Reflecting on the draft day, Clark admitted, “I was so upset because after I got drafted, I just got drug out immediately, and I didn’t get to see any of the draft. I had my phone but I really couldn’t go on it. It made me so upset. I didn’t even get to see Kate get drafted … but it made me really upset.”
Clark also mentioned that she didn’t get to enjoy the celebration with her loved ones, adding, “Then we went and had fun, but … I didn’t even take pictures with you guys, my family, [boyfriend] Connor McCaffery — no one.”
Special Night for Clark
While Clark’s draft night was marked by her selection as the No. 1 overall pick by the Indiana Fever, it was also special for her Iowa teammate, Kate Martin, who was chosen by the Las Vegas Aces with the 18th overall pick. Martin was in the audience, anxiously awaiting her name to be called in the second round, and was thrilled when WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced her selection.
Later that evening, after the draft, Clark and her group, including McCaffery, Marshall, Martin, Gyamfi, and Iowa assistant coach Raina Harmon, headed to The Fleur Room at Moxy Chelsea. The exclusive lounge, perched on the 35th floor, offers breathtaking views of New York's skyline.
In her rookie season, Clark continued to make waves, breaking several records, earning a spot on the WNBA All-Star team, and winning the 2024 Rookie of the Year award.
This year The full 2025 WNBA Draft is scheduled for Monday, April 14, 2025. This date is an important one for all 12 teams, as they will look to strengthen their rosters with top prospects, including potential stars of the future.
