The Dallas Mavericks will play as host when they welcome Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday, April 2 at the American Airlines Center. The main talking point from Mavericks point of view would be whether their star player Dereck Lively II starts against the Hawks or not.

Will Dereck Lively II start against Atlanta Hawks?

Dereck Lively II has been out since January 14 due to a right ankle stress fracture. The team was also missing Daniel Gafford and Anthony Davis in the past two months as well. Lively has been listed as questionable on the team's injury report. It's his second game as questionable after being ruled out of the clash against Brooklyn Nets.

His availability in the game would depend on how he feels before the tip-off. According to Jason Kidd, Lively has been nearing an on-court return as he had a full practice session with the team.

In the 32 games that Lively has played this season, he has been averaging 9.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.7 blocks per game this season.

The Dallas Mavericks are ninth in the Western Conference with a record of 37-39 and are on a one game losing streak. The Atlanta Hawks are eighth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 36-39 and are on a one game losing streak.

Jason Kidd explains Dereck Lively II's importance to Dallas

The Dallas Mavericks traded Dereck Lively II in 2023 NBA draft. He picked up an injury in January as coach Jason Kidd spoke of how big a role he plays for the Mavericks as they continue to develop his game.

He’s one of our best passers, identifying the back door, he’s very comfortable with making that play. … His next step, we’re not gonna say he’s gonna be the next Joker (Nikola Jokic), but being able to playmake and turning down that first guy or being able to be aggressive. To look to score for himself as much as he does for his teammates, Kidd said.
