Luka Doncic has opened up about his unexpected trade to the Los Angeles Lakers from the Dallas Mavericks. The Slovenian stated that he believed Dallas was his home and the trade made him numb. The point guard did not want to upset his fans from the Mavericks and from the Lakers.

While speaking in the Wall Street Journal Magazine for its Fall Men’s Issue, Doncic, as per Yahoo Sports said:

“I didn't know how to react, how to act, what to say.”  

Doncic, as per the aforementioned source, further said: 

"It was a lot of shock. I felt Dallas was my home. I had many friends there. The fans always supported me. I didn't want to upset Dallas fans. And I didn't want to upset Laker fans." 

Doncic’s trade not only surprised the basketball community but also shocked the whole sports fraternity. The Lakers’ point guard was traded for Anthony Davis in a three-team deal facilitated by the Utah Jazz. This came after he closed on purchasing a $15 million home in Dallas. 

Meanwhile, the player has cemented himself in LA by purchasing Manhattan Beach for a sum of $25 million. The luxurious house was earlier owned by tennis great Maria Sharapova. The former Real Madrid Basket star inked a three-year contract extension with the 17-time NBA Champions this offseason.

The 26-year-old recently secured a major international honor at EuroBasket 2025, where he earned a spot on the All-Star team despite Slovenia falling short of a medal. The five-time All-NBA First Team, who was named to the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 All-Star team, through his stunning individual performance enlisted his name alongside the tournament’s finest. 

The list of names includes Germany’s champion point guard Dennis Schröder, Houston Rockets’ center Alperen Sengun, and Franz Wagner of the Orlando Magic. The Slovenian native led EuroBasket in total points and average points per game as he finished eighth in average rebounds while concluding second in assists. 

Doncic is ready for a new era as his new ‘Slim Luka’ look has been going viral for some time now. The player will be entering his first full season with the Lakers.
