Memphis Grizzlies rookie Jaylen Wells had to be stretchered out of the Spectrum Center in Charlotte after a bad fall on the court. The 21-year-old rookie suffered a broken wrist and a wound on his forehead in the clash against the Hornets. Despite his latest injury, the young forward sent a two-word message to the fans of the Memphis Grizzlies.
What was Jaylen Wells two-word message for the Memphis Grizzlies?
After his scary accident that he suffered against the Hornets, Jaylen Wells shared a selfie on his Instagram stories from a hospital in Charlotte. He was still in his Grizzlies jersey as he had a scar above his right eyebrow and had his right wrist heavily banded. It is expected that he will undergo several tests and is ruled out of the ongoing NBA season.
It is understood that Wells can move his extremities as the Hornets' medical team did a great job in securing his neck and back. On the selfie that he posted, he even added a simple message for his supporters and the Grizzlies nation.
Go Grizz, Wells wrote.
The incident took place in the dying stages of the second quarter with around a minute left in the first half. Wells had a fast break and was going for the dunk but Hornets' guard KJ Simpson tried to block the shot as he didn't have the height to reach it. During this process, Simpson landed first as he undercut Wells on the air and cause him to fall on his back and head.
As soon as Wells fell on the court, he appeared to be unconscious. Soon the players, coaches and the medical staff attended the former Washington State guard. He was soon taken off on a stretcher as players and fans prayed for his safety.
After the incident, Simpson was called for a flagrant foul two and had to be taken off the court. The Grizzlies went on to thrash the Hornets (124-100).
Charlotte Hornets players defend KJ Simpson after Jaylen Wells incident
Fans from the NBA fraternity are blaming KJ Simpson for the dangerous play that caused Jaylen Wells injuries. But, Simpson was defended by his coach and teammates after the game as Miles Bridges went on to explain that Simpson is not a dirty player.
I think first of all, the only thing we can do is just pray for Jaylen Wells, Bridges said. He’s a great guy. I’ve talked to him a couple times and he seems like a great kid. It’s very unfortunate what happened to him. I know KJ is not a dirty guy. It was just an unfortunate situation, but I hear things are going well for him.
Simpson was initially called for a personal foul but after rigorous checks, the decision was changed to a flagrant penalty two. The Memphis Grizzlies will next take on Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday, April 11.
