The basketball community continues to mourn the sudden loss of a dedicated player known for his work ethic despite recurring injuries. Brandon Clarke, a forward who spent his entire seven-year NBA career with the Memphis Grizzlies, has died at the age of 29.

The team confirmed his passing on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. Clarke died on Monday in Los Angeles, California. No official cause of death has been released. Clarke appeared in just two games this season due to injuries, including a knee issue that limited his playing time. 

Selected 21st overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2019 NBA Draft and immediately traded to Memphis, he played in 309 regular-season games, earning NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 2020 after averaging 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game as a rookie

The Grizzlies described Clarke as “an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten.” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed devastation over the loss of a “beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit.” 

Tributes poured in across the league and from fans, highlighting Clarke’s defensive prowess, energy, and college success at Gonzaga following time at San Jose State. He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, and held dual Canadian-American citizenship. He spent his three years with college basketball, including one season at Gonzaga.
