On Thursday afternoon, the NBA released its first round of All-Star voting, showcasing the transition between generations in the league. LeBron James and Stephen Curry, two of the biggest names in the NBA, are currently ranked third at their respective positions. LeBron James currently ranks third in the Western Conference frontcourt voting with 1.17 million votes.
He remains in a starting spot, trailing behind Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic, who leads with 1.4 million votes, and Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant, who holds second with 1.27 million votes. James has a solid lead over his Los Angeles Lakers teammate Anthony Davis and San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, both of whom have garnered over 900,000 votes.
East Conference Voting Update: Giannis Antetokounmpo Leads
In the Eastern Conference, Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo is currently leading the voting with 1.7 million votes, maintaining his position as the top vote-getter. Giannis broke LeBron James' seven-year streak as the top vote-getter last season, and he looks to maintain that dominance this year. He is closely followed by Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, who has 1.38 million votes and is on track to make his sixth consecutive All-Star Game. New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns rounds out the top three with just over 1 million votes.
Stephen Curry Faces Strong Competition for Starting Spot
Stephen Curry, on the other hand, could be in danger of coming off the bench for the second consecutive year. He currently ranks third in the Western Conference backcourt, with 870,071 votes, falling behind Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (1.05 million votes) and Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic, who has accumulated 930,000 votes. However, Doncic is expected to miss several weeks due to a calf strain, which could open up the possibility for Curry to secure a starting spot in the All-Star Game, which will take place in San Francisco in February.
Backcourt Battle in the East: LaMelo Ball and Donovan Mitchell in Close Race
The tightest race is in the East backcourt, where LaMelo Ball leads with just under 1 million votes. However, Donovan Mitchell of the NBA-leading Cleveland Cavaliers is only 13,000 votes behind Ball, making for a tight battle for the first starting spot. Meanwhile, Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard is also in the mix, vying for the second spot, while Jalen Brunson and Trae Young hold fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
Upcoming Voting Updates
Voting will continue to be updated on Jan. 9 and Jan. 16, with the final fan voting deadline set for Monday, Jan. 20. Fan voting accounts for 50% of the total vote for the All-Star starters, with media and player votes each contributing 25%. The official announcement of the starters will be made on Jan. 23, with reserves revealed one week later.
