The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) debate is something very common in sports, and it is also in basketball. The discussion primarily centers around Michael Jordan and LeBron James, highlighting their respective legacies and contributions to basketball.
Meanwhile, NBA icon Michael Jordan himself has spoken on the GOAT debate, and here is what the Chicago Bulls' former player has said.
Michael Jordan rejects 'GOAT' debate in Basketball, citing evolution of game
In a recent interview with Gayle King on CBS's Sunday Morning, Jordan dismissed the idea of a single GOAT in the NBA, arguing that direct comparisons across eras are unfair due to the sport's continuous progress. He said:
“There’s no such thing as the GOAT. Not to me."
Jordan added:
“It’s only because we are transcended from other people, other athletes. We learn from other athletes. We progress the game as we move further. To say that one is better than the other is not really right.”
The six-time NBA champion, widely regarded by many as the greatest player in league history for his six championships, five MVP awards, and iconic competitiveness, made the comments amid ongoing debates pitting him against stars like LeBron James. Jordan stated collective learning, where each generation builds on the skills and strategies of those before them.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time that Jordan has said that the GOAT debate doesn't exist for him. The basketball legend also mentioned earlier that he would have loved to play players like LeBron and Kobe Bryant in his prime.
