The Washington Wizards have revealed their much-anticipated City Edition uniforms for the 2024-25 NBA season, dubbed the "Beyond Boundaries Uniform." The fresh design, which features a striking "hydrogen blue" base, serves as a tribute to the team’s history while embracing the future.
The new look draws inspiration from the boundary stones that helped define Washington, D.C., and incorporates a powerful message of resilience: "No boundaries can contain us."
A tribute to Washington’s historic boundaries
The "Beyond Boundaries Uniform" builds on the design introduced in the previous season, which honoured Benjamin Banneker, an African American mathematician and astronomer who played a key role in establishing the original boundaries of Washington, D.C. Banneker’s legacy is reflected in the uniform with three of the six blue stars on the side of the jersey, symbolizing the triangulation of the first boundary stone he placed.
The timing of the reveal is significant, as it coincides with Banneker's birthday, adding a layer of historical significance to the launch.
"We have been honoured to share the story of the Boundary Stones with the DMV sports community over the past year," said Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s chief marketing officer, Hunter Lochmann. "It's been rewarding to see the feedback from fans and historical experts alike, including hearing from and forming a relationship with Benjamin Banneker's descendants."
Unique design elements
For the first time in NBA history, the Wizards' "hydrogen blue" colour graces the court, inspired by the vibrant energy that flows through Washington, D.C. The jersey features a ripple effect pattern along the trim, symbolizing the city’s dynamic flow and its impact on the broader metropolitan area.
Continuing the theme of historical connection, "District of Columbia" is displayed across the chest in a font reminiscent of 18th-century map typography. The same font is used for the "DMV" lettering on the shorts' buckle, nodding to the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia regions that the Wizards represent.
Additionally, the Wizards’ new City Edition logo, a remix of the classic basketball design, replaces the Washington Monument with the boundary stone, reinforcing the uniform’s thematic connection to the city's history.
Debut and future wear
The Wizards will wear the "Beyond Boundaries Uniform" 19 times during the 2024-25 season, pairing the look with a specially-themed court. The uniform will make its debut on December 5th, when the Wizards face off against the Dallas Mavericks.
