WNBA star Sophie Cunningham clarifies contact comments and misconceptions
Cunningham stated she is not upset about the salary but wanted a multi-year deal to establish long-term roots in Indianapolis. In a post on X, Cunningham directly shut down headlines stemming from her recent appearance on the "Show Me Something" podcast, where she described negotiations as "frustrating."
She explained:
I’m gonna shut this down right now. I’m not mad about the money…. I just wanted more years because I love it here.”
The 29-year-old added:
“I wanted to get a house so I could bring my dog and donkey to Indy with me. That’s it. That’s the truth. I think we have something very special here in Indiana!!”
The clarification comes after Cunningham, who was traded from the Phoenix Mercury and signed with the Fever as an unrestricted free agent, suffered a season-ending MCL tear in 2025. The new deal represents a significant raise from her previous salary under the WNBA's updated collective bargaining agreement.
