BCCI sets the record straight on Rohit Sharma's ODI future, says 'the decision on...'

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has firmly put an end to rumors surrounding Rohit Sharma’s retirement, stating unambiguously that the veteran opener has no immediate plans to step away from One Day Internationals.

His statement comes after widespread reports claimed the recent ODI series against England would mark the end of Rohit's international career. Those rumors suggested that head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar had informed the 38-year-old that he was not part of India's vision for the 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa.

Despite the intense speculation, Rohit delivered a strong on-field statement during the series decider at Lord’s. He produced a brilliant counter-attacking knock, scoring 138 off 110 balls, even though India ultimately fell short in the match.

Addressing the media directly, Shukla dismissed all speculation as baseless chatter. He reinforced that Rohit remains an integral member of the national setup, confirming there is no discussion regarding his retirement and urging fans and media to ignore online rumors.

“Rohit is a part of our team and is continuing to play. The things being circulated in the media and on social media have no meaning. As of now, there is no question of his retirement," Shukla told reporters.

Shukla firmly backed the current team setup, pointing out that the selectors have little reason to alter a winning combination. While acknowledging that fans and critics are free to voice their opinions, Shukla stressed that selection decisions ultimately rest with the panel. He reiterated that as long as the Indian team continues to deliver solid performances and secure victories, there is no pressing need to make significant changes to the squad. Rohit had faced growing scrutiny following quiet outings in the first two matches of the series, but his commanding century at Lord’s served as a stark reminder of his world-class ability. Shukla’s public support comes at a critical juncture, given reports that Rohit was dissatisfied after being briefed on his long-term future, even reaching out to top BCCI officials to express his frustration. Although selection panels enjoy broad authority, the board ultimately retains the final say on all major cricket matters.
