More than a week ahead of the three-ODI series against Afghanistan, India’s in-form top-order batter Virat Kohli has suffered a hamstring injury. A couple of days ahead of the one-off Test against Afghanistan, India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said that they are still waiting on official communication regarding not just Kohli but Rohit Sharma’s availability as well.

Earlier in the day, Sports Tak had reported day that Kohli is all but ruled out of the ODI series. Meanwhile, Rohit is yet to report to the Centre of Excellence, Bengaluru. Ten Doeschate said that a final call will be made in a few days’ time upon consultation with the medical staff and adjustments will be made to the squad.

"Official communication will come on that [on Kohli's availability for Afghanistan ODIs]. It's obviously big news when it's someone like Virat or Rohit but same protocols will in place, we'll assess the fitness of those guys and we've got a few days now to decide whether they are fit enough to play and be part of the squad and make adjustments accordingly. But I'm sure some official communication will come through as soon as the medical team has made a decision on that,” former Netherlands all-rounder told the reporters on June 4.

Kohli’s rehabilitation timeline unclear

Kohli may not just be ruled out of the ODI series against Afghanistan but his participation may be doubtful for England series. However, one of the fittest cricketers in the world, Kohli may recover before the expected period given his fitness regime.

Rohit, Hardik subject to clearance

On the other hand, Rohit is yet to report to CoE, Bengaluru. All-rounder Hardik Pandya is already in Bengaluru where he will undergo fitness drills and match simulations. The Mumbai Indians (MI) duo were named in the ODI squad subject to fitness. Rohit had a hamstring injury that made him miss several games whereas Pandya suffered back spasms. Both of them played MI’s last league stage game against Rajasthan Royals (RR). Rohit played as an impact player.

The ODI series begins on June 13 in Dharamsala.
