England finally brought an end to an almost 15-year wait for a Test victory in Australia by emerging victorious at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The visitors chased down the 175-run target with four wickets left to spare as the Boxing Day Test came to a conclusion in just two days. Though England have already lost the Ashes, this was a much-needed win for them and it will act as a big confidence booster heading into the fifth and final match of the series.
Stokes credits Tongue and Bethell
Following the match, England captain Ben Stokes credited Josh Tongue and Jacob Bethell for the side's rare win on Australian soil. While Tongue was the pick of the bowlers for England and racked up seven scalps during the match, Bethell played an important knock of 40 as they chased down the target on the second day.
"Josh Tongue, what an occasion for him. Five-for in front of a huge crowd, and Bethell a crucial knock in tricky conditions. The partnerships we were able to build were exceptional," Stokes said at the post-match ceremony.
Stokes also highlighted how tough the ongoing tour has been for England, but added that it is special for him to be the part of a team that won in Australia after so long. He also praised the Barmy Army for constantly supporting the team during their highs and lows.
"Good feeling, a tough tour up to now. Tough for us as a team, but to be part of a team to win in Australia after such a long time. We play for so many different things, the Barmy Army are very special, constant noise, the guys in the middle hear it, feel it, and know it. There'll be some sore heads tomorrow. After the build-up to the Test, a lot thrown our way, to put in a performance on the back of all that, and beat a very good Australian team, a lot of credit has to go to players, staff and management for keeping the focus on cricket," Stokes said after the match.
Series finale to be played in Sydney
The Ashes stands at 3-1 in the favour of Australia following England's victory in Melbourne. The fifth and final Test of the series will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground and will commence from January 4.
