Ajinkya Rahane's key advice to Indian batters to tackle SL spin conditions, says 'You cannot be too defensive'

Former captain Ajinkya Rahane has urged India's batting lineup to adopt an assertive approach against Sri Lanka's spin attack during the two-Test rubber kicking off in Galle on August 15. His advice stems from experience: Rahane was instrumental in India's 3-0 whitewash on Sri Lankan soil in 2017, where he compiled over 200 runs, including a century and a half-century.

Reflecting on his past success, Rahane emphasized in an interview with PTI that batters cannot afford to play passively. He noted that while pitches in Sri Lanka offer excellent batting conditions on day one, maintaining the upper hand against the bowling attack is essential.

With the hosts fielding a capable spin unit on tailor-made tracks, Rahane highlighted the challenge of facing a strong home side. He stressed that underestimating the opposition is not an option, making early intent and proactive play critical for success. To navigate these spin-friendly conditions, the veteran batter believes every player must execute a clear personal strategy, reiterating that taking the initiative remains paramount even in the long format.

“I think in Sri Lanka, the first day wicket generally is very good. But being top of the bowler as a batsman is very important. That's what I have learned in Sri Lanka. You cannot be too defensive,” Rahane told PTI.

To help the squad prepare for Sri Lanka's spin-heavy environments, the Indian team management added a four-man net bowling unit consisting of Harsh Dubey, Shivang Kumar, Tanush Kotian, and Vipraj Nigam. Comprising a balance of dedicated spinners and spin-bowling all-rounders, this group offers the batting order a wide range of styles to face during their practice sessions.

Coming back to Rahane, while reflecting on his time as a multi-format international, Rahane observed that the explosive growth of T20 cricket has fundamentally altered the nature of Test match batting. He highlighted how traditional red-ball cricket increasingly features T20 specialists executing complex aerial shots, scoops, and reverse sweeps with regular precision—a shift he views as a positive development for the sport.

Central to surviving in this modern era, according to Rahane, is a player's capacity for swift tactical adjustment. With international schedules forcing rapid transitions between white-ball and red-ball series in a matter of days, maintaining a versatile mindset and adjusting on the fly has become essential as the overall standard of play accelerates.

This push for innovation extends to the bowling attack as well. Rahane pointed out that modern pacers are constantly expanding their arsenals, utilising wobble-seam deliveries and frequently attempting Test-match yorkers, a tactic once reserved for a select few fast bowlers. In his view, continuous skill refinement remains the ultimate prerequisite for staying competitive.
