A big debate has emerged within Indian cricket concerning the batting position of wicketkeeper batsman Sanju Samson during the ongoing Asia Cup 2025. Following his demotion from the opening slot in the T20I side, India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, has clarified the team's plans for the talented player.

Samson has been in the spotlight for his strong performances aimed at cementing his place in the national team, as well as for reports suggesting a potential departure from his franchise. His recent form for India has been stellar, marking a successful return to international cricket. In the last calendar year, he scored three centuries as an opener, establishing himself as a capable replacement for Rohit Sharma.
However, the return of Shubman Gill to the T20I squad has resulted in Samson losing his opening position to the vice-captain. Despite this change, he has retained his spot in the playing eleven. Coach Kotak revealed that Samson is being prepared for a new role, indicating that the Kerala star is likely to take up the crucial number three batting position for the team.
"Sanju Samson hasn't batted a lot at No. 5 or 6 but that doesn't mean he can't bat at that position. Everyone knows their roles. Last match he didn't bat at No. 3 but that doesn't mean the same thing will happen in the next game," Kotak said as quoted by PTI.

India will next face their arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14, with many questioning the decision for the two nations to compete on the cricket field. The controversy centers on whether it was appropriate for the Indian team to agree to the fixture amidst heightened geopolitical tensions.
In response, the Indian camp has made its stance clear, emphasising that the team is adhering to the policies and directives of the central government. By doing so, they have indicated a desire to separate sport from political conflict, stating that their primary focus is on playing cricket and not getting involved in the surrounding political controversies.
