Tilak Varma, Shaheen Afridi

Tilak Varma of India leaves the field after hitting winning runs of Pakistan's Shaheen Afridi iin Asia Cup match at Dubai International Stadium on September 21, 2025 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Story Highlights:

Tilak Varma hit Shaheen Afridi for a six and a four to wrap-up the run chase.

Varma remained unbeaten for 30 off 19 balls in the run chase.

India's legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar reserved huge praise for young Tilak Varma for his composed knock in the run chase against Pakistan. In the T20 Asia Cup 2025 clash, Varma ensured that India registered a comprehensive victory over Pakistan after Sanju Samson struggled to find timing. While openers Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill dominated the left-arm pacer in the powerplay overs, Varma hit Afridi for a six and a four to finish the run chase in the penultimate over. Gavaskar feels that the 22-year-old treated him like a net-ball spinner.

"When the second match came along, there was an improved batting performance by Pakistan in the first half before the loss of three wickets put them on the back foot again, and despite getting big runs in the final three overs, they were 20 runs shorter than what they would have wanted. India breezed to a win after a delightful opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill that took the breath away and crushed any hopes the Pakistanis had of winning the game. In the end, another super-talented batter, Tilak Varma, treated Pakistan’s premier bowler, Shaheen Shah Afridi, like a net-ball spinner and smashed him around to wrap a win with deliveries to spare," Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.
