As India gears up for the ODI World Cup 2023, the young wicketkeeper-batter, Ishan Kishan, lightens the mood with a jestful remark. Addressing his fielding capabilities, Kishan quipped that he's geared up to run-out those who dare to snatch two runs against him. This jest came forth during a conversation about transitioning between wicketkeeping and fielding, especially with KL Rahul's return to the squad post-injury.
"I am working hard on my throwing arm. If they try to take two runs from my hand in the World Cup, I would try and get some of them via run-outs (chuckles). Not showing yet my best throwing arm and hopefully, I can get them in World Cup and get some run-outs (chuckles)," Ishan Kishan said ahead of the match on Friday.
Ishan Kishan's recent performances, notably his electric half-century against arch-rivals Pakistan during the Asia match, has more or less sealed his place in the squad. This inning in particular was a standout, helping Team India set a commendable total before rain played spoilsport resulting in a washout.
During the interaction, Kishan also touched upon the dynamism required in the team's batting order. When probed about frequently shifting his batting position, from opening to middle-order, he responded with humility and confidence. For Kishan, the essence lies in being a part of the prestigious side and contributing effectively. He's proven his adaptability, with consecutive half-centuries as an opener, and then showcasing versatility with a crucial fifty in the middle order against Pakistan.
"You know, you are not sure where you are gonna bat when you are playing at this level. Especially in this team, where you have got such good batters. Whenever I open the batting, I love to be as aggressive as I can so that I can give a very good start to my team and build a long innings. At the same time when you bat in the middle order, you need to read the situations," Kishan said.
"You need to know what role you have on the side, you need to assess the conditions. Accordingly, you need to see the situation and see the challenges in front and bat accordingly. Even though opened the innings, it doesn't make a big difference to me. I have played at this number also and skipped my regular position as well. So, it doesn't make a big difference to me, it is about reading the situation and playing according to it," he concluded.
This adaptable approach, combined with his fiery form, makes Ishan Kishan a valuable asset for Team India as they head into the all-important World Cup, with high hopes pinned on the young prodigy.
