Bangladesh's superstar cricketer Mahmudullah has announced his retirement from T20I cricket. Mahmudullah has made it clear that he will bid adieu to the shortest format of the game after the conclusion of the ongoing T20I series against India.
Mahmudullah announces T20I retirement
Mahmudullah's decision comes after a long and successful career for the Bangla Tigers, which began in 2007.
Bangladesh's star all-rounder confirmed that the final T20I against India in Hyderabad on October 12, will be his final appearance in the T20I format. He played in the first match of the series on October 6, but was dismissed for just one run by Indian debutant Mayank Yadav.
“I think it’s the right time to retire from this format. I’ll try to concentrate on ODIs that are coming up,” Bangladesh's veteran all-rounder said at the pre-match press conference ahead of the second T20I against India.
In 2021, Mahmudullah announced his retirement from Test cricket as well. However, he is expected to continue playing One Day Internationals (ODIs) for Bangladesh. In the 2023 World Cup, he was the team's highest run-scorer, indicating that he is unlikely to retire from the ODI format anytime soon.
The 38-year-old made his T20I debut in 2007 against Kenya and has been a crucial member of the team for much of his career. He holds the distinction of having the third-longest career in T20 internationals, following his compatriot Shakib Al Hasan and Zimbabwe's Sean Williamson.
Mahmudullah's T20I Career in numbers
Mahmudullah is one of Bangladesh's most accomplished players in T20 cricket. He holds the record for the most T20I appearances for the national team, and only one player has scored more runs than he has in this format.
To date, the right-handed batsman has played 139 T20Is, amassing a total of 2,395 runs, including eight half-centuries. The only player to surpass him in T20I runs for Bangladesh is Shakib Al Hasan. In addition to his batting prowess, Mahmudullah is also a capable spinner, having taken 40 wickets in T20Is. Despite his achievements, his position in the T20I team has been questioned in recent times. Following a disappointing performance in this year's T20 World Cup, where he scored only 95 runs in seven matches, there have been calls to consider dropping him from the squad.
