After the English Premier League and multiple other major sporting events have been postponed due to the rise in cases of Covid-19 now the Big Bash League (BBL) has been hit by the virus. The match between Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Stars that was scheduled to take place on December 30 (Thursday), at Marvel Stadium has been postponed.
A member of the Stars’ support staff reportedly received a positive Covid-19 test result. All Stars players and staff who have been in contact with the positive case undertook PCR tests later and they are currently awaiting results.
BBL is expected to come up with a new rescheduled date for the match.
Refund process in action
This piece of news will indeed throw the fans into chaos but ticket holders for tonight’s match have been assured that the tickets will be contacted directly regarding the refund process.
The league and all teams will continue to prioritise the safety of the players, match officials, staff, fans the BBL 11 season.
Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s General Manager of BBL, said in an official statement, “While regrettable, the decision to postpone tonight’s match was the only option available given the exposures within the Stars cohort.
“The League has a number of biosecurity protocols in place to keep our participants safe and the competition moving forward. These protocols are regularly reviewed in response to the risks in each state. Safety remains our number one priority and we will work with the Stars to get their side back on the field as soon as possible.”
League table
The Stars sit sixth on the BBL league table with three wins and three losses, still in the hunt for a top four finish.
Perth was defeated by Sydney Thunder last time in Canberra for its first loss of the BBL11 season.
