India's Shushila Devi won her second silver medal in Judo after losing to South Africa's Geronay Whitebooi in the 48kg category final of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 on Monday, August 1. The Indian displayed tremendous technique against her South African opponent but faltered in the final seconds of the match.
The final move from the South African came out of nowhere and caught the Indian Judoka by surprise. By the end of the event, however, she said that an injury hampered her chances at the ongoing multisport event.
"When I came here in the Commonwealth Games, the goal was to take home the gold medal, because I had won silver in Glasgow 2014," she said. "The idea was to get gold because I had experience on my side this time, but my injury put me on the back foot and I was not at my 100 per cent," she added.
When asked about the stitches on her leg with which she had to fight in the final, Shushila reiterated that this injury was not at the back of her mind. "The injury was not playing at the back of my mind. I guess I was not up to the mark today," she said.
When asked about what was the motive behind taking up Judo as a discipline, the athlete said that it was for bettering the condition of her family. "I have always wanted to better the condition of my family through sports. Judo has always been a difficult sport for India to bring a medal in, I wanted to change that," she concluded.
