Pakistan batter Haider Ali has not had a good record attempting to sneak quick singles after failing to work the ball in the gap. Last month, Ali got out stumped trying to take a single while the ball was still in the wicketkeeper’s hands. Few weeks later, Ali tried to run a single while the bowler and fielders were appealing for lbw and got run out.

On Day 1 of County Championship Division Two clash between Derbyshire and Durham, Ali walked out to bat at no.5 and stage was set for him to score big. The 22-year-old got off to a good start as well.

In the 77th over, he was batting on 38. He had already hit two fours and one six during his knock. Then he had a brainfade moment. Scott Borthwick bowled it on the leg stump and Ali went for a sweep. He missed the shot and Borthwick appealed for leg before wicket.

The umpire said no and Ali should have stayed in the crease. But Ali was unaware of where the ball had gone and tried to take a single. The ball was barely out of the crease and wicketkeeper Oliver Robinson was quick to catch hold of the ball and take the bails off.

Despite the hilarious dismissal, Derbyshire were in a good position at the end of day's play. Brooke Guest batted well after the openers were dismissed cheaply. He shared a 118-run partnership for the third wicket with Wayne Madsen. Matthew Potts broke the partnership. Madsen scored 62 runs from 96 balls including nine fours.

Guest and Ali shared an 80-run partnership for the fourth wicket. After Ali's wicket, Borthwick dismissed skipper Leus du Plooy for a single-digit score. Anuj Dal did not last long at the crease and got bowled by Raine. At the end of day's play, Guest remained unbeaten for 145 runs from 257 balls including 22 fours. His knock helped Derbyshire post 317/6 on the board.
