Michael Vaughan's comment came right ahead of the fifth Test between England and India.

India and England are gearing up for the fifth Test match in Dharamsala, with India holding a commanding 3-1 series lead. Despite the series already being decided, England aims to restore their honor in the final showdown. The spotlight is on the English batter to step up after falling short in the preceding three Tests of the series. With the final Test commencing on March 7, ex-England cricketer Michael Vaughan has advised England's batters to consult Joe Root on his batting approach during the Ranchi Test.'

Vaughan wants Stokes, Bairstow to learn from Root

Root, previously struggling in the series, made a significant turnaround in Ranchi by scoring a century in the first innings. However, England failed to build on Root's performance, experiencing a dramatic collapse in the second innings of the fourth Test. Vaughan, in his comments on Cricbuzz, emphasised the need for the English team to bat more intelligently and take cues from Joe Root's innings.

"I hope what England don't do is - that they say, 'we should have gone harder'. I would disagree with that, I would say that England need to play smarter at times. You look at Joe Root's innings, he was knocking it around, playing technically correct, obviously he has got boundary options. I hope that the rest of the England batters sit with him or advice and ask him 'what is it that you did in Ranchi that you did not do in the last 3 Test matches' because it was a different Joe Root," Vaughan said ahead of the final Test match.

"This was a different Joe Root in Ranchi. He did not play the fancy shots like he did in the previous few weeks. I hope that Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes take a leaf out of Joe Root's book," he further added.

You cannot play in one gear in Tests: Vaughan

Discussing the upcoming final Test match, Vaughan expressed his admiration for the intricate nature of Test cricket and conveyed his hope that England would display a greater range of tactics in the series' concluding match.

"You cannot play in one gear in Test cricket. You have to play the situation and that's why Test cricket is the best format," Vaughan concluded.
