India's ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is on cusp of tasting history when India lock horns with England in the third Test in Rajkot which is scheduled to start from February 15. R Ashwin is poised to bag a big milestone in his Test cricket career as he approaches the record for the most Test wickets by an Indian bowler on home soil.
Ashwin after Kumble's big record
Currently, this record is held by the legendary Anil Kumble, who accumulated 350 wickets from 63 matches, boasting 25 five-wicket hauls and seven 10-wicket hauls. Ashwin is just 5 wickets shy of achieving this historic feat. The 37-year-old spinner has amassed 346 wickets in 57 matches, including 26 five-wicket hauls and six 10-wicket hauls.
Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan currently holds the overall record with 493 wickets from 73 matches, featuring 45 five-wicket hauls and 15 10-wicket hauls.
Ashwin will have the opportunity to surpass Kumble's record when India takes on England in the third Test of the five-match series, commencing on February 15 at the SCA Stadium in Rajkot.
Ashwin on brink of breaching multiple milestones
Meanwhile, Ashwin is just 1 wicket away from reaching the milestone of 500 wickets in Test cricket. Since his debut in November 2011, the seasoned campaigner has amassed 499 wickets from 97 Tests.
Additionally, Ashwin requires 3 more wickets to become the first Indian player to claim 100 wickets in Tests against England, a team led by Ben Stokes. Currently, only James Anderson has achieved this feat, with over 100 scalps in Test matches between England and India.
In the current Test series, Ashwin has secured 9 wickets from 4 innings, maintaining an average of 36.33. His best performance was 3/68 in the first innings of the opening Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
Moreover, Ashwin has contributed 78 runs in two matches, averaging 19.50, with a highest score of 29. His role is expected to be pivotal for India's success in the ongoing Test series.
