Tilak Varma ran riot with the bat to lead India to a thrilling two-wicket win over England in the second T20I on January 25. Tilak Varma's superlative knock has drawn former Indian cricketer and Chennai Super Kings stalwart Ambati Rayudu's attention who has heaped ultimate praise on the young batter and declared him a 'superstar cricketer'.
Ambati Rayudu declares Tilak Varma as 'superstar cricketer'
Rayudu believes that Tilak Varma possesses the talent and potential to excel in all three formats of the game – T20Is, ODIs, and Tests. He envisions Varma as a key player for the Indian national team across all formats. The maturity displayed by Tilak Varma during his innings particularly impressed Rayudu. He strongly urged the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee to carefully nurture and groom the young talent, with the aim of developing him into a valuable asset across all three formats of international cricket.
"He is a superstar cricketer and I have seen him grow in Hyderabad. He has played four extraordinary knocks. Since Suryakumar Yadav has become the captain, the confidence he has been given and the trust that has been shown in him, he is paying him back fully," Rayudu said during an interaction on Star Sport.
"I feel India have got a huge superstar and he can become an all-format player. It's not that he is only a T20 player. Considering the maturity he showed today (Saturday), he has the ability to be a match-winner for India for many years. So I feel he should be backed in every format," he added.
Rayudu while further elaborating on Tilak's top notch knock said that how the star batter disrupted England bowlers' plan.
"England came with a plan that they would bowl short against Tilak Varma, wouldn't give him room, and make him play the pull shot towards fine leg. However, Tilak Varma had all the answers. He used the pace very well. Angles are extremely important in batting. He was hitting the balls wherever he wanted using the pace. He batted exceptionally with the right approach and execution, and I don't think England will again try to bowl like this," he further stated.
Tilak emerged as the lone warrior for India in the second T20I against England, playing an intrumental role in securing an epic victory. Despite limited support from his partners, Varma stood firm at the crease, delivering a sensational 72-run knock that guided India to victory. His performance in Chennai was nothing short of extraordinary. Varma surpassed the previous record for most runs scored between dismissals in T20Is, previously held by New Zealand's Mark Chapman with 271 runs. He also surpassed Virat Kohli's record of 258 runs across four consecutive T20I innings.
