In a dazzling display of cricketing brilliance New Zealand's batting sensation Rachin Ravindra notched a scintillating century against Australia in their World Cup 2023 match at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on October 28, Saturday. However, Rachin's exploits went in vain as New Zealand were handed a five-run defeat at the hands of Australia in a nerve-jangling match.
New Zealand might have lost the match but Rachin etched his name in the record books with a 77-ball century. This remarkable century propelled Rachin into an elite club, equalling Sachin Tendulkar's the sensational record.

A record so exceptional, that only two players have ever achieved it - scoring twin centuries in a World Cup before turning 24. These iconic players are none other than Sachin Tendulkar during the 1996 World Cup and now, Rachin Ravindra in the 2023 edition.
But, what's even more intriguing is Rachin's profound connection with cricketing greats which dates back to his very name. Born to a Bengaluru-based father who revered cricket legends Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar, Rachin's name is a clever amalgamation of the two - "Ra" from Rahul and "chin" from Sachin. A testament to his father's admiration for the cricket maestros.
Rachin emulates Sangakkara and Root's record
In the ODI World Cup, Rachin has now jointly secured the second spot for scoring most centuries while chasing. Joining this elite list, Kumar Sangakkara had achieved this feat in 2015, Shakib Al Hasan and Joe Root both in the 2019 World Cup, each having scored two centuries while chasing targets. Rohit Sharma leads this chart, having accomplished three centuries during the chase in the 2019 World Cup.
Fourth Kiwi Player to Achieve This Milestone
Rachin becomes the fourth New Zealand player to score most centuries in a single World Cup. Prior to him, legends like Glenn Turner (1975), Martin Guptill (2015), and Kane Williamson (2019) had reached this remarkable milestone.
Second Youngest to Score 400 Runs in World Cup
Rachin has set another record by becoming the second youngest player to score 400 runs in the World Cup. He accomplished this feat at the age of 23 years and 344 days. The record for the youngest player in this category still belongs to the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who achieved it at the age of 22 years and 313 days.
Rachin ended up scoring 116 off 89 balls before Pat Cummins removed him in the 41st over. Rachin's explosive century, combined with James Neesham's lethal death-over striking, took the match down to the wire. However, New Zealand fell short by five runs, failing to overhaul Australia's mammoth target of 389 runs. Currently, in the World Cup standings, Australia occupy the fourth position, amassing eight points from six matches (four wins and two losses). New Zealand, though holding the third spot with two losses and four victories.
