Joe Root was dismissed for a golden duck against India in the low-scoring encounter.

Former England skipper Joe Root bagged a rare golden duck in World Cup 2023 in the run chase against India at Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on October 29. Root was trapped in front of the stumps by Jasprit Bumrah and he immediately reviewed the decision but the DRS did not go his way despite a minor spike when the ball passed the bat. Root was disappointed at the decision of the third umpire as he expressed it on his way back to the dressing room.

The dismissal happened in the fifth over of England's run chase. Bumrah pitched it up with the angle. The ball skidded and kept low to hit Root on the pad. The minor spike was visible when the ball passed the bat. However, the bat was slightly away from the ball. Root showed his bat to umpire Adrian Holdstock as he was shocked by the decision displayed on the screens.

Commentator Michael Atherton explained the minor spike that made Root believe that he was not out. He said that it was the sound of his trigger movement as he moved a little across the crease.

Root’s name entered the record books of the World Cup alongside Virat Kohli. Root and Kohli are the only no.3 batters to bag a duck in a World Cup match. Kohli was dismissed for a nine-ball duck by David Willey as he went down the track but could not get the elevation and got caught by Ben Stokes inside the 30-yard circle.

Once again, England suffered a collapse in a run chase. Chasing a target of 230 after a superb bowling display, they lost half their side for 52 in the 16th over. Bumrah drew first blood with the wicket of Dawid Malan in the fifth over. He followed it up with Root's wicket.

In the eighth over, the dot ball pressure got to Stokes as he went for an unnecessary shot and got bowled by Mohammed Shami. In his next over, Jonny Bairstow got bowled as well. Skipper Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali were looking to steady the ship but a ripper from Kuldeep Yadav got the better of him.
