India's semifinal appearance marks their fourth consecutive time reaching this crucial stage of the tournament, having unfortunately fallen short in the top four of the previous two World Cups. For the knockout stage, the ICC introduced specific rules to ensure a definite outcome for both the semifinals.
In addition to the provision for a reserve day and extended extra time in case of weather disruptions or other unforeseen circumstances, the ICC has modified the Super Over rule specifically for the semifinals. The Super Over will come into play if the match ends in a draw.
Super Over Rule for World Cup 2023
But, the modified Super Over rule differs from the conventional Super Over. If the match ends in a tie, both the teams will continue to play Super Over indefinitely until a winner is determined.
In the event of weather disruptions or other unforeseen circumstances that prevent the completion of the Super Over during the semifinals, or if the match is declared abandoned or results in a no-result at the end of the one-day reserve day, the outcome of the semifinal will be determined based on the respective teams' positions in the league stage. As of the league stage's conclusion, India stands at the top with 18 points, followed by South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. This implies that if the semifinal between India and New Zealand ends in a tie, India will advance to the final due to their superior league stage ranking. Similarly, if the semifinal between South Africa and Australia ends in a tie, South Africa will progress to the final.
But if the World Cup 2023 final gets draws and if weather disruptions prevent the completion of the Super Over, or if the match is abandoned or declared a no-result at the end of the reserve day, the competing teams will be declared joint winners.
