After a heated encounter in the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup 2023, the Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi players refrained from the customary post-match handshake. This came after Bangladesh secured a three-wicket victory over Sri Lanka at New Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium on Monday, November 6.

The players from both teams deliberately avoided interacting with each other following Tanzim Hasan Sakib's winning shot off Angelo Mathews. The tense atmosphere came about because of the unprecedented 'timed out' of Mathews, which was a first in international cricket.

During the first innings, a controversial decision unfolded as Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a timed-out ruling against Sri Lanka's Mathews. The latter's broken helmet strap caused a delay of over two minutes before he could face his first ball.

Mathews argued that the helmet malfunctioned during his adjustment, not before stepping onto the field. Despite his efforts, Mathews was forced to exit without taking a single delivery, sparking a charged moment. This incident injected vigor into the otherwise subdued match, leading Mathews to engage in a conversation with Shakib, urging him to confer with the umpires.

After Mathews' exit, Asalanka aggressively batted, achieving his first ODI World Cup century. Scoring 108 off 105 balls, including six boundaries and five sixes, he steered Sri Lanka to a total of 279 runs in 49.3 overs.

Shakib and Najmul Shanto's half-centuries and a solid 168-run partnership for the second wicket placed Bangladesh in a dominant position during their pursuit of 280 runs. Notably, the game saw Mathews exact poetic justice, dismissing both Shakib and Shanto in the second innings. Interestingly, it was Shanto who informed Shakib about the rule leading to Mathews' dismissal.

Nevertheless, Bangladesh clinched victory with three wickets and 8.1 overs to spare, marking their first-ever win against Sri Lanka in the history of ODI World Cups.
