While stalwarts like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Mohammed Shami may stick around for some time, the responsibility now falls on a younger generation to propel the team forward.Players likeShubman Gill (24), Shreyas Iyer (28), Ishan Kishan (25), Ruturaj Gaikwad (26), and Yashasvi Jaiswal (21) are set to play a key role.

In the aftermath of a tearful Sunday night for the Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli exchanged a quick handshake and hug with Shubman Gill before proceeding to collect the runners-up medal. This moment showed the generational shift in Indian cricket following the team's failure to clinch a third World Cup.

While stalwarts like Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Mohammed Shami may stick around for some time, the responsibility now falls on a younger generation to propel the team forward and establish a new legacy free from past setbacks. Players like
Shubman Gill (24), Shreyas Iyer (28), Ishan Kishan (25), Ruturaj Gaikwad (26), and Yashasvi Jaiswal (21) are set to play a key role, hopefully alongside a recovering Rishabh Pant (26), as India sets its sights on the T20 World Cup 2024 and beyond.

The question arises: who should India invest in as the future leader? Former India batter Robin Uthappa suggests that Shreyas Iyer could be the fitting candidate, citing his dedication, confidence, and impressive performance at the No. 4 position.

"Shreyas Iyer has demonstrated significant dedication and confidence. He appears quite impressive, particularly at the No. 4 position. If he keeps up this level of performance, it wouldn't be astonishing to see him lead the Indian team, especially in white-ball cricket," said Uthappa on his YouTube channel.

With the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies approaching, there is a temptation to adopt tunnel vision for that tournament alone. Yet, this could be a grave mistake, as the current international cycle (2023-2027) includes three major global white-ball events - the Champions Trophy 2025, co-hosting the 2026 T20 World Cup with Sri Lanka, and the 50-over World Cup in 2027.

In addition, the search for successors to lead spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, both in their 30s, necessitates strategic planning. While Kuldeep Yadav's resurgence offers some comfort, the team management must identify a robust partner for the left-arm wrist spinner. Exploring options like leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi and left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar becomes imperative to develop a strong support line.
