Ex-Indian pacer Zaheer Khan recently voiced his insights about Australia's squad in the impending ODI World Cup. In his discussion on Cricbuzz, ahead of the India-Australia curtain-raiser ODI, Khan emphasized Australia's key advantage: their impressive lineup of all-rounders. He lauded the Pat Cummins-led team for its comprehensive balance and acknowledged the plethora of match-winners within their ranks.
"Australia have a great squad for the ODI World Cup. Especially they have long list of all-rounders which will be an added advantage for the side. Glenn Maxwell is also set for a return in the side. They have Cameron Green, Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Stoinis. Cameron Green is one of their attacking top-order batters who do not let you settle in as a bowler. Sean Abbot is a great player as well and should further strengthen the squad," Zaheer said.
"In India we talk about Hardik Pandya being a huge plus for the side, and Australia have 2-3 of those and that's why they will have the added advantage in the ODI World Cup," he further added.
However, not everything is smooth sailing for the Aussies. Their robust lineup is marred by injury-related setbacks. Travis Head, Australia's in-form opener, faces a hiatus from the initial phase of the World Cup due to a fractured finger. The silver lining for Australia is the much-anticipated return of cricket stalwarts: Cummins, Steve Smith, and Glen Maxwell, all recuperating from injuries. As the mega ICC event approaches, getting their team dynamics right will be Australia's priority.
Further adding to Australia's challenges is their recent 3-2 series loss to South Africa. Under Mitchell Marsh's captaincy, the Aussies couldn't capitalize on their initial 2-0 series lead, eventually conceding the series. This roller-coaster performance adds intrigue to their World Cup campaign, making them a team to watch.
