Pakistan-born USA bowler Ali Khan made a statement on his return from suspension with a unique celebration after dismissing Netherlands opener Vikramjit Singh in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 Qualifiers clash on June 22. Khan took a splendid catch off his own bowling on follow-through and then took a tape out of his right pocket and put it on his mouth.

Why Khan was banned?

The USA pacer was banned for two international matches in April 2023 for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during World Cup Qualifier Play-off match against jersey.

He received one demerit point for breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

With one demerit point, he completed a total of four demerit points in 24-month period which led to his suspension under article 7.6 of the Code. He had a total of three demerit points from two separate T20I clashes against Bermuda in November 21.

Khan’s impressive first spell

Opening the bowling, Khan took a wicket and conceded 16 runs from four overs. He did not bowl for the rest of the innings. He had to leave the field due to a stomach bug. USA missed his services as Netherlands made a comeback despite losing four wickets for 83 in the 22nd over.

Edwards leads Dutch home

Chasing 212, the partnership between Teja Nidamanuru and skipper Scott Edwards changed the game. Nidamanuru got out for a 68-ball 58 but Edwards carried the run chase on his back. He had support from Logan van Beek who held on to one end. Edwards played a perfect captain's knock as he guided Netherlands to victory by five wickets with 40 balls to spare. Edwards scored 67 runs from 60 balls including six fours.

This was Netherlands' first loss of the tournament. They are placed third on Group A points table with a negative net run rate (NRR). They will take on Nepal in their next clash on June 24.
