Young Indian batter Riyan Parag has come under fire for comments made before the 2024 T20 World Cup. Former fast bowler and commentator S Sreesanth took aim at Parag, calling his remarks ‘unpatriotic’. Parag, who dazzled with the bat for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2024, publicly stated he had no interest in watching the T20 World Cup 2024 and wouldn't be following the matches. This came despite his impressive IPL season, where he was the third-highest run scorer. Parag was ultimately overlooked for the T20 World Cup squad, with the selectors opting for other players. It seems his lack of enthusiasm for the international tournament may have played a role in his selection.
Earlier Riyan Parag had told The Bharat Army:
“It will be a biased answer (prediction on the top four teams), but to be very honest, I don't even want to watch the World Cup. I'll just see who wins it at the end, and I'll be happy. When I play in the World Cup, I will think about the top four and all of that.”
Riyan Parag's comments before the T20 World Cup sparked controversy. Fans criticised him, suggesting an ‘attitude problem’. Now, two-time World Cup winner Sreesanth has piled on. He slammed Parag for his ‘irresponsible’ and ‘unprofessional’ statement, especially considering India's historic win. Sreesanth weighed in on the issue of young players disappointed about selection, stressing the importance of national pride and supporting the team despite personal setbacks.
Sreesanth tears into Riyan Parag's T20 World Cup remark
Sreesanth didn't hold back, criticizing Parag for prioritising personal feelings over national pride. He emphasized that young players should put their love for the country and cricket before any disappointment over selection. Sreesanth urged them to respect the selectors' choices and wholeheartedly support the team chosen for any tournament.
He highlighted the importance of unity and backing the BCCI's decisions. In his view, patriotism and passion for the game are crucial qualities for any aspiring Indian cricketer. Sreesanth's message to Parag? Focus on national pride first, then think about selection.
“Some youngsters have also said that they will not watch the World Cup because they have not been selected. I would say that first you should be patriotic, then yes, you should be a cricket lover. But those who have selected the team, they should be supported with all their heart, mind and passion,” Sreesanth said on air during the T20 World Cup 2024 final.
