Jay Shah intends to have discussions with Dravid before the marquee event.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah on February 14 confirmed that Rahul Dravid will remain India men's cricket team's head coach till the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies.

Dravid's contract ended after the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 where India were beaten by Australia. The former India captain was asked to remain in the position along with the other support staff for the tour of South Africa.

Shah revealed that he had a conversation with Dravid where it was decided that he will lend his services till the mega event in June this year.

“After the (2023) World Cup, Rahul bhai had to leave for the South Africa tour immediately. We did not get to meet in between which finally happened today,” Shah told the reporters on the sidelines of the renaming of the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium on February 14.

“Why are you worried about a contract for such a senior person like Rahul Dravid? Rahul bhai will remain the coach in the T20 World Cup,” Shah asserted.

The 35-year-old also said that there will be a few more discussions because the Indian team had a packed schedule with back-to-back series.

“I will speak with him whenever there is time, there are back-to-back series happening right now. They were in South Africa, then there was a (T20I) series against Afghanistan (at home) and now England. We did not get to speak in between at all,” he added.

Other key points from the event

At the event, Shah also confirmed Rohit Sharma as India's captain for T20 World Cup and all-rounder Hardik Pandya as his deputy. He showed faith in Rohit-led India to end the ICC trophy drought this year.

On workload management during IPL

Also, he talked about workload management of players during the Indian Premier League (IPL) saying that the franchises will have to follow the board's guidelines for centrally contracted players.

“This is the BCCI's mandate. The BCCI is the supreme body and whatever it decides the franchises will have to follow — we are above the franchises,” he said.
