The Board of Control for Cricket in India has finally deferred a final decision on Ajit Agarkar’s position as chairman of the men’s senior selection committee. While his future is on hold as of now, the frontrunner has also been revealed in case he opts to leave the position.

At its 95th Annual General Meeting, the BCCI authorised its office-bearers to determine whether the former India all-rounder receives an extension or whether the board should begin searching for a replacement. Agarkar’s current term is due to expire next month.

With no immediate resolution, the office-bearers now hold the authority to grant a possible one-year extension or to start the formal process of advertising the role and appointing a new chief selector. During the meeting, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla confirmed the development as he spoke to the media after the meeting. He said:
“The AGM has authorised the office-bearers to take a decision on the chief selector.”
Meanwhile, in case he decides to leave the position, the BCCI will have to replace him immediately and name a successor. Former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel has emerged as a strong candidate to replace him as the men's senior selection committee chairman, as per a report in the Times of India.
Appointed in July 2023, Agarkar has overseen a mixed but largely successful period for the Indian team. Under his watch, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, won the 2024 T20 World Cup and lifted the 2025 Champions Trophy. The side also endured notable setbacks, including a 3-0 home Test series defeat to New Zealand in 2024 and a 3-1 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
