Afghanistan have become the fifth team to seal their spot in the Super 8 stage of the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 after their big win over Papua New Guinea. Before them, South Africa, Australia, India, and West Indies confirmed their places in the next round of competition. Afghanistan have also eliminated New Zealand from the mega tournament and have taken their seeded spot in the Super 8s. With India now have two confirmed matches in the Super 8 clash and one potential opponent.
Seeded placements for Super 8 groups
There are four groups with four teams and out of them, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super 8 stage, where they will be further divided into two more groups. ICC has already given seeds in Super 8, two teams of each group received a seeded spot from the beginning of the tournament. However, if any of the eight seeded teams do not reach the Super 8, thier place will be taken by the unseeded team that qualifies.
Group 1: India (A1), Australia (B2), New Zealand (C1), Sri Lanka (D2)
Group 2: Pakistan (A2), England (B1), West Indies (C2), South Africa (D1)
Like Afghanistan will take New Zealand's spot in Group as C1 as they made it into the next round of competition instead of the BlackCaps.
India's confirmed matches for Super 8
Team India now have two confirmed matches in the Super 8 stage. They will be starting the next round with the clash against their fellow Asian side Afghanistan in Barbados and the other confirmed clash is against the former champions Australia. Their remaining match was supposed to be against Sri Lanka but as the Lankan Lions have already been eliminated from the mega tournament, their spot will be taken by some other team from Group D.
As for now, it appears as if the spot will most likely be taken by another Asian side Bangladesh. They are in a strong position after their win against Sri Lanka and Netherlands. It would require a lot of changes in the current scenario to throw them out of the race.
