Australia's two-time ODI World Cup-winner Glenn Maxwell retired from the format owing to fitness issues after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semifinal defeat to India. On his return to Australia's One-Day Cup for Victoria, he entertained the Brisbane crowd with a scintillating 82-ball 107 in unsuccessful run chase against Marnus Labuschagne's Queensland. Interestingly, this is Maxwell’s maiden century in the List A (One-Day) format in his 15-year career for Victoria.
The 36-year-old walked in to bat in the run chase of 311 when Victoria were 104/5 after 24 overs. Michael Neser had done damage with the new ball, dismissing Matthew Short and Marcus Harris for ducks and Harry Dixon for a single-digit score. Thomas Rogers scored 23 whereas Peter Handscomb departed after scoring 55 off 73 balls.
Maxwell’s single-handed effort in run chase
He shared a 31-run partnership with wicketkeeper-batter Sam Harper who scored 27 runs from 38 balls. Will Sutherland could not make an impact either and fell to Mitchell Swepson. Victoria were 164/7 in the 34th over. Maxwell hit a couple of sixes in the next over to reach his fifty from 37 balls. He found boundaries with easy. As the slog overs approached, he accelerated. In the 43rd over, he hit Gurinder Sandhu for two sixes to reach his fifty from 73 balls. Sam Elliot hit a six in the over as well. But Jack Wildermuth returned to dismiss Elliott. In the 46th over, Maxwell's patience ran out too seeing the required run rate slip away from the grasp. He was caught by Tom Straker trying to take on Wildermuth.
Maxwell hit eight fours and seven sixes in his 82-ball 107. Victoria were bowled out for 255 in 46.2 overs, losing the match by 55 runs.
Labuschagne back in form
Earlier, Victoria captain Sutherland won the toss and opted to bowl first. he struck with the new ball. Maxwell ended Jack Clayton's troubled stay at the crease. Queensland skipper Labuschagne scored 130 runs from 118 balls. He had support from Lachlan Hearne (43-ball 40) and Wildermuth (30-ball 54 not out) as Queensland posted 310/5.
Maxwell to play another One-Day game
Maxwell is available to play another match for Victoria in the ongoing Dean Jones Trophy 2025. Victoria's next match is against Tasmania on September 19. Then, he will head to New Zealand for the T20I tri-series which commences on October 1.
