Namibia defeated Oman during a thrilling clash that went to the super over in match 3 of the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, on June 3. However, it was a big miss from wicket-keeper Naseem Khushi that caused the match to reach the super over stage where they eventually lost the match despite putting on an astonishing performance.
Naseem Khushi's big miss
During the last over of Namibia's innings, Mehran Khan managed to defend 5 runs. However, he even created an opportunity to win the match on the last ball as Namibia needed 2 runs in 1 ball. Wiese failed to hit the ball well and it went near the keeper who missed a clear run-out opportunity under the pressure. Oman was bowled out on 109 runs and was counted out after the first innings but their efforts with the ball turned the tables and brought them to the doorsteps of victory where they eventually fell short. If Khushi had picked that run-out, Oman would have picked up a famous one-run win in the T20 World Cup.
Wiese's heroics in the Super Over
The game between Namibia and Oman went to the super over. This was the first super over in T20 World Cups after 12 years as the last one happened between New Zealand and West Indies back in 2012. Namibia batted first and scored 21 runs in the 6 balls. David Wiese gave a blazing start after hitting a four and six on the first two balls against Bilal Khan. Then captain Erasmus hit back-2-back boundaries to end the over. Wiese was back to duty with the ball as well and didn't allow Oman to make another comeback and won it for his team by 11 runs.
“Lost a couple of years tonight, don't know how many I have left in me now. Just been that kind of an emotionally draining game. (On his Super Over bowling) I had a feel for the wicket and knew what I had to execute in the Super Over. The pitch was difficult, was a bit two-paced, and different to what we expected. I think we adapted well and it was surely a pitch where you had to spend some time out there. I think if we were chasing 180, we would have had to attack without thinking too much about the pitch, so tough to say what would have been a par total on this wicket,” said Wiese in the post-match presentation.
