4 pacers including Jofra Archer have been rested for T20Is.

England Cricket Board (ECB) on October 13 announced their T20I and ODI squads for white-ball tour of Australia which will begin on November 13. As England continue their preparations for the ODI World Cup 2027 against reigning champions, they have named a near full-strength squad. Jacob Bethell has recovered from right knee injury and returned Also, Jofra Archer has been picked for the ODIs after getting rested for ODI tri-series in Pakistan.

“The returns of Jacob Bethell and Jofra Archer for the ODI series means that we will be at close to full strength as we ramp up preparations for a World Cup in a year’s time,” said England national selector Marcus North.

In addition to wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler, pacer Saqib Mahmood was unavailable due to injury as well. On October 12, Buttler underwent successful hamstring injury and he isn't expected to return to action anytime soon. In his absence, Jordan Cox is expected to keep wickets and bat in the middle order. With Bethell's return, Tom Banton may have to warm the bench.

Mahmood was ruled out of Australia tour due to a knee injury. Mahmood's previous ODI appearance was against India in July 2026.

Players dropped from ODIs

Uncapped young all-rounder James Coles has been dropped from the squad that has been picked for ODI tri-series in Pakistan. The only other player missing is leg-spinner Mason Crane who has returned to the setup after eight years. England have relied on more pace for the Australian tour.

Big changes in T20I squad

In the T20I squad, Bethell and Phil Salt have returned after recovering from their respective injuries. Opener Salt had been ruled out of T20I series at home against Sri Lanka last month due to a quadriceps injury. Despite Salt's result, Aneurin Donald has retained his place in the squad. Donald had scored 46 runs from three T20Is against Sri Lanka.

The Harry Brook-led T20I team will miss the services of their pace quartet — Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker and Josh Tongue – as they have been rested keeping in mind the three-Test series on South Africa soil.

“The four quick bowlers will then leave after the three-game ODI series as we look to manage them ahead of the Test tour of South Africa,” North explained.

Young Thomas Rew and Eddie Jack have received their maiden England call-ups. 18-year-old Rew had led England to the final of the ICC Men's Under-19 World Cup 2026 where they lost to the Indian side featuring Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Rew had made his T20 Blast and The Hundred debut this year. He has scored 314 runs from 17 innings at a strike rate of 153.17 including a fifty. 21-year-old pacer Jack has played just seven T20s so far and taken eight wickets. Earlier this year, he was roped in by MI London as their wildcard pick but did not play a game.

Also, left-arm pacer Luke Wood has returned to the squad. Wood was dropped from England's list of centrally contracted players on October 12. 31-year-old Wood had played his previous T20I against India in July 2026 where he remained wicketless and conceded 35 runs from three overs. So far, he has played 17 T20Is for England and taken 19 wickets at an average of 24.31.

“Our T20 team has been in excellent form under captain Harry Brook and we are looking forward to the opportunity to test ourselves in Australian conditions against a very good team," North said.

“We will have four uncapped players in an exciting IT20 squad including Thomas Rew and Eddie Jack, both of whom toured Australia with the England Lions last year, and who earn their first England call-ups.”

England’s ODI, T20I record in Australia

England have played 74 ODIs against Australia in Australia. They have 25 wins and 48 defeats whereas one ended in no result.

The last time England toured Australia in 2022, they won the three-T20I series 2-0. England and Australia have played four T20I series at the latter's homeground. One ended in a draw whereas two were won by Australia.

Australia to play with a second-string side?

After the South Africa tour, Australia are expected to announce a near full-strength squad. But, a few of their fast bowlers' workload is likely to be managed. For the T20I series, the Test-bound players are likely to miss a few games. The T20I series concludes on December 2 at Manuka Oval, Canberra. The Test players' focus will be the four-Test series at home against New Zealand starting on December 9 at Perth Stadium.

Australia, England’s T20I and ODI team rankings

England would look to remain at the top of the ICC Men's T20I team rankings. Currently, they have the same rating points as Australia, closely followed by Australia. In the ODIs, England are ranked sixth whereas reigning ODI World Champions are ranked fourth.
