Will Rohit Sharma break Virat Kohli's all-time T20 World Cup record? Indian captain needs 68 runs vs South Africa to reach summit

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has been in sublime for in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. In the big encounters against Australia and England, he proved his mettle with half-centuries. After missing the century against Australia by just eight runs, Rohit reiterated that he does not want to play for personal milestones. However, he has a chance to break his opening partner Virat Kohli’s all-time T20 World Cup record. 
 

Kohli holds the record for most runs in a single T20 World Cup edition. Kohli achieved the feat in the 2014 T20 World Cup when India reached the final against Sri Lanka. He scored 319 runs from six innings at an average of 106.33 including four fifties. 
 

If Rohit gets a big score, he can go past Kohli. He needs to score 68 runs against Aiden Markram-led side to reach the top. The 36-year-old has scored 248 runs from seven innings at an average of 41.33 including three fifties. His strike rate of 155.97 is outstanding considering the playing conditions in this T20 World Cup.

Even if he scores 52 runs, he will enter the elite list of batters who have scored 300 or more runs in a single edition. The other three names in the list are former Sri Lankan opener Tillakaratne Dilshan (317 runs), Pakistan captain Babar Azam (303 runs) and former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene (302 runs).

More feats to be achieved by Rohit

Rohit is also the third-highest run-scorer in the season. The top spot is occupied by Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz (281 runs) followed by Australian opener Travis Head (255 runs). Among the players in the T20 World Cup 2024 final, the next on the list are South Africa's wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock (204 runs) and Suryakumar Yadav (196 runs).
 

Another list where he can reach the summit is the leading run-scorer in T20 World Cups. Kohli has 1,216 runs, five more than Rohit. However, Rohit who was a part of India’s T20 World Cup 2007 triumph has 11 more innings than Kohli.
 

Kohli struggles for form

Kohli has struggled to find form in the ongoing edition. He has scored 75 runs from seven innings including two ducks. But the skipper and coach Rahul Dravid have backed him to score big in the final.
