Former India opener Virender Sehwag has given his verdict on India’s next captain, saying that Virat Kohli may have stepped down as T20I captain but he is the right man to lead the nation in Test and ODIs. Kohli’s tenure as captain comes to an end with India’s campaign in the ongoing T20 World Cup. India’s encounter against Namibia is his last one as the skipper in the T20 format, but will continue being part of the squad.

“This is Virat’s decision but I don’t think he should leave the other two formats’ captaincy. If he wants to play just as a player, it is his decision. I feel India are playing well under his captaincy. His records as a captain are superb. It’s his personal decision whether he wants to continue as the ODI and Test captain or not,” Sehwag said on Virugiri Dot Com.

He also stated, “According to me, he should lead India because he is a good player, a good captain who leads from the front.”
Sehwag applauded the work of his former teammate stating that Kohli has earned enough credit to continue as the captain of the Test and ODI side. India’s Test series win over Australia in 2019 was glittering storyline of his Test captaincy. It was the first time an Asian team had won a Test series down under in 71 years.

The 43-year-old was also full of praise and said it is only down to luck that India haven’t succeeded during crucial period under Kohli’s captaincy. Losing the semi final of World Cup 2019 on reserve day and the World Test Championship final in Southampton on another unfortunate reserve day, have proved costly for him in longer run.
“I know we should support the team during bad times but it’s been a long time we haven’t won any major ICC tournament. India should definitely introspect on it. Winning bilateral series is one thing but people only remember you if you win world tournaments consistently,” the Delhi-born cricketer said.
