Virat Kohli has been the key player of India’s T20 side for over a decade now. The current Indian skipper was not part of the first three editions of T20 World Cup but in this edition will have his sights on a record which is currently held by former Sri Lankan skipper and T20 World Cup 2014-winner Mahela Jayawardene.
On the list of most runs in T20 World Cup over the years, Kohli is in the fourth position with 777 runs from just 16 matches. India’s no.3 batter needs 223 more runs to breach the 1,000 run mark and become the second batter to achieve the feat, only if Chris Gayle does not beat him to it. While Jayawardene has 1,016 runs from 31 matches, Gayle has 933 runs from 29 matches followed by another former Sri Lankan cricketer Tillakaratne Dilshan, who has 897 runs from 35 matches.
Bevanesque average
The 32-year-old has nine half-centuries in T20 World Cup, most by any batter in the history of the tournament. Also, no one even comes close to Kohli’s herculean average of 86.33 among batters who have played a minimum of 10 innings in the mega event.
While India have named Hardik Pandya as their designated finisher, it is Kohli who has been doing the job in last three editions. From 16 innings, he has remained not out in seven innings including his high score of unbeaten 89 against West Indies in the semi-final of T20 World Cup 2016 at Eden Gardens which ended up in losing cause. In the average department, there is only one current batsman who is in top five of highest averages in T20 World Cups. Kohli’s teammate Rohit Sharma has 673 runs from 28 matches at an average of 39.58 including six half-centuries.
