Cameron Green has defended the catch that he took to get the wicket of Shubman Gill off Scott Boland's bowling during India's second innings on Day 4 of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at The Oval in London on Saturday, June 10.
In the eight over of the final innings of the game, Gill's knock of 18 runs in 19 balls was abruptly brought to an end after Boland forced an outside edge off his bat that was caught by Cameron Green who was standing at gully. The on-field umpires referred it upstairs and third umpire Richard Kettleborough took his time and gave him out despite ball touching the ground from various angles.
Speaking about the wicket during the post-match press conference, Green shared his honest opinion but also sympatised with the crowd for their reaction. “I definitely thought I caught it. In the heat of the moment I thought it was clean, threw it up and obviously showed no sign of any doubt,” he said.
“Then it’s left up to the third umpire and he agreed. Obviously, the Indian crowd are so passionate and one of their favourite guys, Shubman Gill, got out…I think they were all kind of looking forward to watching (him bat). We move on.”
India need 280 more runs to win the WTC final, with Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane batting on 44 and 20 respectively. As the fourth specialist pacer in the Australian pacer, Green knows the challenge that lies ahead on Day 5.
“You’ve always got to play what’s in front of you, 100 per cent,” he said.
“We’ve been working so hard for two years to have any doubts about pushing in this game. We’re not going to focus too much on what’s coming ahead and just focus on the next day,” the all-rounder added.
