Australia not only won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) after ten years after defeating India in the fifth Test of a fierce series at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), but they also guaranteed their place in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final. When the Pat Cummins-led side plays South Africa at Lord's from June 11 to 15, they have the opportunity to win the coveted prize again and retain their crown. Australia defeated India in the Oval final to win the 2023 WTC.
Aussies create world record
The 2025 WTC final will mark Australia's 14th appearance in an ICC event final. This makes them the first team to participate in as many summit clashes of senior men global events. In the elusive list of teams that have played the most ICC finals, they have surpassed India (13) in the rankings. The only two teams in history to have participated in more than 10 ICC final are Australia and India.

Australia has participated in two Champions Trophy finals, two T20 World Cup finals, and two WTC finals. They have advanced to the Cricket World Cup final eight times. Australia has won 10 titles and lost just three in its 13 final appearances to date (1975 World Cup, 1996 World Cup, 2010 T20 World Cup). Regarding India, they have participated in three T20 World Cup finals and four Cricket World Cups. In addition, the Men in Blue have participated in the Champions Trophy summit match four times and the WTC final twice.
Except Afghanistan and Ireland, Australia now owns the series championship against all nine Test-playing countries. This is only the sixth time that this has occurred. Two times before, in November 2005–September 2005 and January 2007–January 2009, Australia accomplished the feat. Another notable record was held by South Africa (December 2012 to March 2014) and India (March 2017 to January 2018 and December 2021 to January 2022).
