Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar reviewed Gautam Gambhir's stint as head coach after Rohit Sharma & Co. lost a three-Test match series against New Zealand. New Zealand achieved a 3-0 whitewash over India, marking the first time India has experienced a home Test whitewash since South Africa's 2-0 win in the 1999-2000 season. This series is also notable as it is the first occasion India has been swept 0-3 in a home series.
In the exclusive conversation with India today, Gavaskar said that the results will speak for themselves by giving the example of Gambhir's first assignment as head coach where Sri Lanka defeated India in an ODI series.
"The results speak for themselves. Even in Sri Lanka, India lost an ODI series after a long time. And now here, it's a loss, it's a terrible loss. So, I think the results speak for themselves," said Gavaskar.
Gambhir was appointed as Rahul Dravid's successor as India's head coach. Dravid's tenure with India ended with T20 World Cup 2024 win and Gambhir joined the India squad for the Sri Lanka tour where the Suryakumar Yadav-led T20 side won the series and Rohit Sharma-led side lost the ODI series. The second biggest loss under Gambhir's stint in clean sweep 0-3 against New Zealand in Test series. Team India will now travel to Australia for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
