Indian skipper Rohit Sharma did not hide his frustration as Yashasvi Jaiswal was sloppy in the field and dropped as many as three dropped catches. Rohit shouted as Jaiswal dropped Marnus Labuschagne's catch in slip cordon. Rohit expressing his disappointment did not sit well with former Australian cricketer-turned-commentator Michael Hussey as he said that it is unbecoming for a captain.
“I’ve got to be honest, I don’t like that reaction from the Indian skipper. I appreciate he’s emotional, and he desperately wants wickets, but you’re the one who has to send the message of calm and support. No-one means to drop a catch. He’s gonna feel bad enough as it is for putting a catch down, especially someone like Marnus Labuschagne, it happens quickly, it’s in, it’s out. You don’t need to see that as a young player," Hussey said on Fox Sports.
Jaiswal had a forgettable day in the field on Day 4 of the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). First, Jaiswal dropped opener Usman Khawaja's catch at leg slip off Jasprit Bumrah's bowling. Khawaja did not make much impact and departed after scoring 21 runs. He lost his wicket to Mohammed Siraj.
The second dropped catch was of Labuschagne off Akash Deep's bowling. Labuschagne went on to score 71 runs. He was dismissed by Siraj as well. Later, he dropped the catch of Australia captain Pat Cummins at silly point. Interestingly, Jaiswal got both hands on all these dropped chances but could not hold on to it.
Rohit and Jaiswal's performance with bat
Earlier in the Test, Rohit decided to open the innings alongside Jaiswal instead of batting at no.6. The move did not work in his favour as was surprised by the short ball from Cummins and handed an easy catch to Scott Boland. The 37-year-old scored just three runs from five balls. So far, he has scored just 22 runs from four innings in the series.
On the other hand, Jaiswal made a comeback with bat after struggling against Mitchell Starc. He scored a half-century and shared a 102-run partnership for the third wicket with Virat Kohli. However, Jaiswal was run out after a mix-up with Kohli leading to his wicket. Cummins stopped Jaiswal from taking a quick single. He departed after scoring 82 runs from 118 balls including 11 fours and a six.
