Yashasvi Jaiswal returned to the pavilion after scoring just 4 runs

Yashasvi Jaiswal's poor shot selection which cost his wickets on Day 3 of the third Test against Australia left batting legend Sunil Gavaskar disappointed. It was Mitchell Starc who hunted Yashasvi Jaiswal again in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar 2024-2025 series. While criticising India's star batter's shot, Gavaskar felt it wasn't the best one to play from an opener.

After Australia's first innings ended at 445, the onus was on India's opening pair of Jaiswal and KL Rahul. However, Jaiswal's innings was short-lived as he was caught by Mitchell Marsh at square leg for just four runs.

“It’s not the best of shots. You are facing 445 runs, then I think it’s important for you to get your eye in. It wasn’t even a half volley, and you have tried to flick that ball away, and it’s a simple catch. Very good field placement and very good captaincy by Pat Cummins for sure," Gavaskar was quoted as saying on ABC Sport.

“But that’s not the best of shots that you expect from an opening bat, particularly when your opposition has got 445. Your job now for that one hour was to try and stay at the crease. Jaiswal, very very disappointing," Gavaskar further added.

Jaiswal fell prey to Mitchell Starc for the third time in the ongoing series. Gavaskar advised Jaiswal to be more practical, especially against the new ball. He clearly said that while positivity is important, it's crucial to be realistic and avoid aggressive shots in the first over.

“It wasn’t even a half volley. I can understand if it was a half volley; sometimes you are not able to keep it along the ground. It was a length ball, you were never going to be able to keep that ball down," Gavaskar concluded.

Michael Vaughan criticises Jaiswal too

Gavaskar wasn't the only one to slam Jaiswal's dismissal as former England skipper Michael Vaughan also joined the chorus. Vaughan came down heavily on Jaiswal for his immature approach, arguing that he should have prioritised solidity over aggressive strokeplay in the crucial Gabba Test.

“Five minutes before Jaiswal got out, this is the shot he practiced that whip through mid-wicket, a wonderful shot and good balance. And then you go into the match and it’s the same shot but he goes aerial, just flicks it. It was the pressure of the game, in practice it’s perfect,"  Vaughan said on Fox Sports.
