India's Test cricket legend Cheteshwar Pujara reckons that Jasprit Bumrah has all the qualities of being a good captain and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should look at him to lead the team after Rohit Sharma's retirement. Recently, Jasprit Bumrah-led India registered a dominating 295-run win against Australia in the Perth Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2025.
Bumrah captained India as Rohit Sharma missed the clash citing personal reasons. The legendary speedster captained India for two times against England and Australia.
"He is (a viable long term captaincy option) without any doubt," Pujara said on ESPN Cricinfo.
"The way he has showed that in difficult circumstances when we had a tough series at home and when you are playing a first Test match in Australia and to put up a show like that."
"I think he has the capability of leading the team and he's a team's man. You look at him he never only talks about himself, he talks about the team, the other players. What advice he would give," he added.
Underconfident Team India travelled to Australia after losing 3-0 against New Zealand in three Test match series that also dented the hopes of the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Pujara also praised Bumrah's down-to-earth behaviour and humble personality.
"There are times when players don't need advice and he accepts it, he says that.. if there is an experienced player he will keep quite. That is the sign of a good captain.
"He is very down to earth, very friendly with players in the dressing room and eager to help and he is good person to chat with. Even outside of cricket he has a humble personality," Pujara said.
Rohit Sharma will return for the second Test in Adelaide, starting December 6, and Bumrah will relinquish the captaincy for this pink ball fixture.
